Borg Locks is helping lock the door against Covid-19
Digital push button locks are used extensively across much of the UK’s NHS, Care Home and Educational estates. With the spread COVID-19, although cleaning protocols have been increased, an area of concern remains on any high-touch surfaces, including door hardware. However, Borg Locks has developed an innovative solution designed to limit the transmission of COVID-19 and other viruses on a digital push button lock in high-traffic areas.
Cu-Shield – the use of copper in the fight against COVID-19
Extensive scientific research demonstrates that pathogens including coronaviruses are proven to be rapidly and completely destroyed on contact with copper and copper alloys, under typical indoor usage conditions. This is a stark contrast to other popular metallic door hardware materials, on which pathogens persist for several days.
The Cu-Shield is a complete combined forged and machined shield made from a high copper content (minimum 60% Cu content). It has been carefully designed and manufactured to encase the complete digital lock. It is not an applied finish or coating. Whilst having the look of brushed brass, the high copper content of the Cu-Shield means it significantly and continuously reduces the microbial loading on touch surfaces between standard cleaning episodes. The Cu-Shield lock will retain its rapid kill properties against known pathogens despite natural oxidisation, which may occur over time.
Initially, three of our most popular products in which to have the Cu-Shield: Borg Locks BL5400 Series for heavier duty applications and the smaller lighter duty BL2500 and BL2701 (Key Override) contract sized models.
BL5400 Series: The BL5400 Cu-Shield will be available as a retrofit kit to be installed over the top of an existing fitted product, and for new installs the Cu-Shield will also be made available complete with BL5400 preinstalled within the Cu-Shield.
BL2701 (KO Model) / BL2500 Series: The BL2701 Cu-Shield will be available as a retrofit kit to be installed over the top of an existing fitted product, and for new installs the Cu-Shield will also be made available complete with BL2701 preinstalled within the Cu-Shield.
The BL2500 Cu-Shield will ONLY be supplied as a complete lock preinstalled within the Cu-Shield. The Cu-Shield-only element will not be available at this time. Both BL2500 and BL2701 Cu-Shield will be supplied with replacement internal forged Cu pad handle unit.
